Successful Civil Engineering Prospect
Begins At KLIUC
Well, it might sound bizarre and according to some historical records, the first creation of Civil Engineering was most probably a wheel. The explanation for the uncanny story is that, when human started to abandon a nomadic living style and began to consider the need for the construction of shelter, human must first solve the problem of transportation to carry massive building materials, and thus, it led to the development of the sailing system.
Regardless of how weird the history of the profession might begin, one thing for sure, Civil Engineering is the oldest engineering discipline that tasked with responsibility to oversee the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply systems. And the term “Civil Engineers” is coined to address those who are bestowed with the talents to transform drawings on architectural plans into structures that stand tall in realities.
However, with the advent of new information technologies, civil engineers’ roles have increased in complexity. They are now at the intersection of the built, natural and information environment. Besides their traditional obligations, their real challenge now is to meld the built, information and natural environments effectively to meet society’s needs.
In view of these changes in trends, Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College (KLIUC), a premier Infrastructure University in the country, recognized that as with any career, success begins with a well-rounded education. Preparation for a Civil Engineering career should start with a comprehensive university programme that takes in hand all the latest challenges faced by the industry currently.
KLIUC is thus will not hesitate to take the lead among all the private higher learning institutions to formulate a series of full-scale civil engineering programmes, ranging from foundation, undergraduate, to postgraduate, with the aim of getting its students well-prepared for a successful career in the profession.
All these programmes are designed to provide our learners a chance to apply mathematics, practical skills and science tools in dealing with real problems in the profession. Learners will also be equipped with broad-based technical expertise, professional skills and academic knowledge that meet the expectations of civil engineering industry.
In addition, building on the strength of the university’s background, of which KLIUC formerly known as IKRAM, the training center for Public Works Department’s civil engineers, the university is definitely capable and confident to push back the frontiers of civil engineering with its rich training ground, experience and facilities.
At present, the key civil engineering courses offered by KLIUC are Foundation in Engineering, Diploma in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons), Master of Civil Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy in Civil engineering. All these programmes have been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), while Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) has also granted full accreditation to the two undergraduate programmes. More to the point, KLIUC’s Bachelor Degree is fully recognized by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
Diploma in Civil Engineering
KLIUC’s Diploma in Civil Engineering is designed to accommodate the needs of those who are interested to expose themselves to the world of built environment. In order to make sure learners are trained to meet the market demand, its syllabus is constantly reviewed and updated. This is a 2 ½ years-programme that will lead students to explore the fundamental knowledge of engineering and also management, finance and communication.
The minimum entry requirement for this programme is at least three relevant credits in SPM or equivalent. Graduates with this qualification can start out their career in civil and construction companies, either government or private, contractors or specialized subcontractors.
Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons)
Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons) offered by KLIUC is designed to equip learners with broad-based civil engineering knowledge, along with a specialized area of engineering study, such as structural, geotechnical, water, and environmental engineering. Besides these core courses, students will also be exposed to information technology, business knowledge, and a 14-week industrial training to enhance their adaptability in facing the challenging nature of business world.
On top of that, students of KLIUC will stand a good chance to have their training, or even career opportunity at PROTASCO and its subsidiaries, a major player in the country’s infrastructure development.
This engineering programme will take students four years to complete, and upon completion, learners can join the relevant workforce as contractors, consultants, engineers, managers, and researchers. Minimum requirement to enter this programme is STPM with 2 Principals, Certificate in Matriculation / Foundation, or a recognized Diploma, or other qualifications as accepted by the Senate with the minimum CGPA of 2.00.
Postgraduate Studies in Civil Engineering (By Research)
Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering and Master in Civil Engineering are the two postgraduate programmes offered by KLIUC to advanced learners who already earned their first degree in the relevant engineering studies. Both postgraduate studies are designed to furnish students with intellectual ability to conduct research independently and acquire vital skills to employ advanced tools and techniques that will support their professional development.
Candidates who engaged in these postgraduate programmes will be required to pursue a specialized research area, ranging from Construction Engineering, Geometric Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Highway and Pavement Engineering, Structural Engineering and Water Resources Engineering.
The duration of study for Master in Civil Engineering is between 11/2 to two years for full time study and three to four years for part time study. Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering usually requires its candidates to have at least a relevant master’s degree qualification, and it will take learners a minimum of three years and maximum of eight years to earn the qualification. This doctorate programme will have its inaugural intake in November this year. For further information, kindly contact KLIUC at 03-8926 6993 / 019-388 3435 or e-mail to inquiry@kliuc.edu.my.
