PONGGAL FESTIVAL @ KLIUC: GRATITUDE AND PROSPERITY
The Harvest festival, fondly called “Ponggal” in Tamil is an annual event celebrated by the Hindu community all over the world. It is usually held in the middle of January every year. Ponggal is actually a Harvest festival regarded as one of the most important festivals in India as it marks the process of harvesting crops by farmers. This festival is celebrated with enthusiasm and joy by all Indians regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. In Tamil, the word Ponggal literally means “boiling over or spill over”. This act is demonstrated by letting the uncooked rice boil over with milk in a beautifully decorated clay pot and it symbolises future prosperity for the practitioner and his respective family.
GOOD START FOR KLIUC'S DANCERS
When the invitation letter of Festival Tari Piala Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah 2009 was handed to the advisors, it was only two weeks left for the club to prepare for the event. Thus, the club members had to make a fast decision on accepting or rejecting the invitation. Everyone in the club including the advisors were excited to participate but the time constrain was the main factor that worried us. However, if we were to reject it, we would have denied the skills and capabilities of the club members and lost one of the biggest opportunities that could be the starting point to move ahead and gain a valuable experience. By the time we chose the choreographer, it was only ten days left before the big event. But for us, it was a competition that we had always wanted to hone our talents, and gain an amazing experience in performing arts beyond our normal boundaries (with-in KLIUC).
