Community Service Program (Program Desa Siswa)
The Community Service Program titled Program Desa Siswa was officially launched on 10th June 2007 by Y.B. Prof. Dato’ Wan Hashim Bin Wan Teh, the Member of Parliament for Gerik. The launch of the program was carried out at the Multipurpose Hall, Kampung Perah. The guests were the President of Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University (KLIUC), Prof. Dato’ Wira Ir. Dr. Mohamad Noor Bin Hj Salleh, the Vice President of Student Affairs Division KLIUC, Dr. Che Pee Saad, Government Officials and local villagers.
The participants of this adoption program are forty KLIUC students, consisting of twenty-four male students and sixteen female students, and twenty-one families from the village, who adopted the former group. Four international students from Egypt and Sudan partake in the program which was initiated by KLIUC Student Representative Council.
The objective of the program is to provide the students with an opportunity to experience lifestyle in a village. Apart from that, the students were also involved in community service programs.
In the evening of 10th June 2007, a tele-match was organized with the local community. The overwhelming support given by the locals was astounding. Majority of the participants in the program were children major. The overall winners received hampers offered by KLIUC.
On 11th June 2007, the program started with ‘gotong royong’ program early in the morning. The students, divided into two groups, were given the responsibility to clean the compound of the mosque and the graveyard. In the afternoon, all of the students and a number of the villagers were taken to Tenaga Nasional Berhad Hydroelectric Power Plants at Bersia Gerik, Perak. We were briefed on the functions and the importance of Hydroelectric Power Plants. We also visited the dam and the reservoir which provides water for the area.
There were two friendly matches – football and netball, which began at 5 pm, between KLIUC and the villagers at Kampung Perah. Heavy rain didn’t stop the team from Kampung Perah to win both games.
The students who would be taking UPSR, PMR and SPM received tuition in Mathematics and English at Sekolah Agama Rakyat Kampung Perah. The turnout for the tuition program, held for two sessions during the evenings, was extremely impressive – all three classes were full and the students demonstrated high enthusiasm. Both tuition sessions started at 8.30 pm and ended at 11.00 pm. In the second session, the students were encouraged to be motivated to study hard and be successful in the future.
The students were taken to Banding Island the next morning and were briefed about Pusat Perikanan Malaysia and Royal Belum Jungle. On the same day, a religious talk on the importance of knowledge was delivered by Captain Shahrill, from 303 Angkatan Tentera Malaysia, at the local mosque.
The next day, aerobics exercise was organized by the JKKK Kampung Perah at the Multipurpose Hall, and in the afternoon, the students spent time being with their foster families and going to the nearest town, Gerik and Sg. Petani.
The closing ceremony, held on 14th June 2007 at 8.30 am at the Multipurpose Hall Kampung Perah, was attended by all villagers and students. The ceremony started after the arrival of the State Assemblyman of Temengor, Y.B. Dato’ Haji Hasbullah bin Osman. KLIUC was represented by the Vice President of Student Affairs Division, Dr Che Pee Saad. After the closing speech, the participants performed a sketch and sang a song to their foster parents. During the performance, one could not but notice the tears in the eyes of everyone who was present for the unhappiness of the would-be separation. Nevertheless, as scheduled, the students took the bus and went back to KLIUC at 2.00 pm.
